Cybersecurity Best Practices for Remote Employees
Embrace Secure Remote Access
When working remotely—whether from a cabin, a beach rental, or your favorite coffee shop—it’s important to protect how you connect. Always use a company-approved Virtual Private Network (VPN). VPNs encrypt your internet traffic and prevent prying eyes from accessing sensitive data while you’re away from the office.
Be Cautious with Public Wi-Fi
Public Wi-Fi may be convenient, but it’s rarely secure. Avoid logging into work accounts or handling sensitive data when connected to open networks. If you must use public Wi-Fi, connect through your VPN, disable auto-connect features, and avoid networks that seem suspicious. For extra safety, consider using your phone’s mobile hotspot instead.
Avoid USB Charging Stations
Public USB charging stations—found in airports, cafes, and hotels—can be compromised by cybercriminals. This technique, known as “juice jacking,” allows attackers to install malware or steal data through a USB connection. Stick to using your personal charging block and wall outlet, or carry a fully charged power bank.
Secure Personal Devices Used for Work
If you’re using a personal device for work, treat it with the same level of caution as your work-issued equipment. Use strong passwords or biometrics, keep your operating system and apps updated, and enable device encryption. Whenever possible, create separate user profiles to keep your work life and personal life isolated.
Disable Unnecessary Connectivity Features
When not in use, turn off Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and auto-connect settings. These features can make your device vulnerable to unauthorized access or tracking—especially in crowded public places.
Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
Passwords alone aren’t enough. Enable MFA on all work accounts and systems, including email, VPN, cloud storage, and collaboration platforms. MFA adds an extra layer of protection by requiring a secondary code or approval method—making it much harder for attackers to access your data.
Have a Plan for Lost or Stolen Devices
Summer travel increases the risk of losing your laptop, tablet, or phone. Make sure your organization uses mobile device management (MDM) software or a similar solution that allows you to lock, locate, or remotely wipe devices if they go missing.
Stay Alert to Seasonal Scams
Cybercriminals take advantage of seasonal distractions. Be wary of phishing emails that appear to offer vacation deals, last-minute changes to work travel, or password reset requests. Don’t click unfamiliar links or download unexpected attachments. When in doubt, verify with your IT team.
Make Security a Daily Habit
Cybersecurity isn’t just your company’s responsibility—it’s yours too. With the freedom to work from anywhere comes the responsibility to protect your data, your devices, and your organization’s digital environment.
